本町の真謝海岸においてウミガメの大量死が確認された件について

　久米島町では2000年に久米島ウミガメ館を設置して以来、ウミガメの保護活動を通して、海洋環境の保全や大切さを発信してきた久米島町にとりまして、今回の事態については非常に痛ましく遺憾であるとともに、ご心配をおかけした全ての皆様に対し、心よりお詫びを申し上げます。
　現在、久米島漁業協同組合等の関係団体と再発防止策を協議中ですが、今後、ウミガメの専門家や国・県等の関係機関の指導助言を受け、島の豊かな藻場を保護しながらウミガメと漁業が共存できるよう取り組んでまいります。
　また、久米島町では天然記念物等の希少生物が生息する自然豊かな島の環境を保護する目的で今年度「ホタルとサンゴの島宣言」を行う予定です。ホタル舞う里山、ウミガメ等が回遊する里海を保全して、島の自然環境を次世代に引き継いでいくことは私たちの責務でもあります。つきましては、町民及び関係各位のご理解、ご協力を賜りますようお願い申し上げます。

Regarding the confirmed mass mortality of sea turtles on the seashore of our town

Since the establishment of the Kumejima Sea Turtle Museum in 2000, the town of Kumejima has been promoting the conservation and importance of the marine environment through the protection of sea turtles. We are extremely saddened and regret this situation. We sincerely apologize to everyone who has been affected by this situation.
We are currently discussing measures to prevent recurrence with the Kumejima Fishery Cooperative Association and other related organizations. With the guidance and advice of sea turtle experts and related organizations such as the national and prefectural governments, we will work to ensure that sea turtles and fisheries can coexist while protecting the island's rich seaweed beds.

Kumejima Town is planning to make a "Firefly and Coral Island Declaration" this year to protect the environment of the island, which is rich in nature and home to rare species such as natural treasures. It is our responsibility to preserve the natural environment of the island for future generations by preserving the satoyama where fireflies fly and the satoumi where sea turtles, etc. inhabit. We would appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the town's residents and other concerned parties.
